Relive is an app used by more than 15 million people to track and share their outdoor adventures. We think that being outdoors and exploring the world around you is amazing for your mental and physical wellbeing, and we're on a mission to get everyone exploring the outdoors and living a healthy and active life.


We're growing fast (100% YoY for most metrics). We currently grow 100% organically via viral/word of mouth growth loops - users share an activity from Relive to their social media and that triggers their friends to sign up too. This works because our users love our product and love to share it with their friends and family. We are aiming to have more than 100 million users of Relive within the next 3 years.

We're looking for a CTO that can help take Relive to the next level. You'll be in charge of defining and executing an ambitious technical strategy and roadmap to help us grow more than 10x. You'll take the lead in pointing the technical ship in the right direction - making key decisions about our tech stack, our architecture, and how we work. Your job is to make sure that we can move incredibly quickly and still deliver a great experience that our users love.


To achieve these ambitious goals you'll lead and grow a talented team of engineers (27 today, growing to 50+ in the near future), and increase the pace and quality of engineering at Relive. You'll be expected to define and build a great engineering culture - helping to find and foster the right kind of talent to execute on your plans. You are the primary voice of engineering inside and outside Relive, sharing its work, evangelising its success, and articulating its vision.

πŸ‘ Our CTO is:

Strategic - You define, own, and execute our long-term technology strategy. You’ll play a central role in Relive’s leadership team and report directly to our CEO, Lex. You know how to make informed decisions that supports a wider company strategy.


Strong opinions weakly held - you're opinionated about what a great engineering culture and a great tech stack looks like, but you also know how to identify which parts of your playbook make sense for Relive and why. You know when to copy/paste from your experience and when you need to try something new.


A team builder - you know who you want on your team and you will play a central role in getting them on board. Needless to say, our recruiters will be there to support you. Together you build and lead a brilliant engineering team with a passion for solving user problems, a high sense of ownership, and a culture of getting stuff done.

  • A first-time manager ready to level up.
  • A very experienced individual contributor.
  • A strong people manager with no engineering background.


What's my mission?

  • Work closely with our CPO (Lee) to figure out where the product will go in the next years and define and execute a technology strategy and roadmap to enable it.
  • Work directly with the rest of the leadership team and our board to make sure our strategies are aligned and we're delivering on our commitments.
  • Design, grow and lead our engineering organisation. You will have a defining role in growing Relive from a 35 to 100+ FTE tech company.
  • Build a high performing engineering culture that lets us execute on our ambitious product and tech strategies and that attracts and retains the right talent.
  • Be accountable for engineering velocity, product quality, security, and performance.
  • You'll be the direct manager of a number of engineer managers who each oversee up to 3 product teams. You'll be responsible for developing these engineering managers and working with them to improve our people and processes.
  • Constantly look ahead and make sure we're solve the problems that come with increasing the scale of both our user base and our team.


What you bring

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience with at least 4 years as a leader.
  • Experience leading teams who build and maintain mobile apps at scale (preferably iOS, Android and React Native).
  • Experience designing, launching and running critical, large scale, high-performance backend infrastructure (preferably AWS).
  • Experience scaling engineering teams and culture
  • Good understanding and experience in information security and privacy.
  • Strong leadership skills and extensive experience in leading teams within a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication skills and business knowledge, comfortable working with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

We believe working at Relive should, just like our product, help you lead a healthy and happy life. It's important to be able to work flexibly - where you work, when you work. Being able to head out for a run to clear your head, or being able to work from nature for a few weeks per year. How much time you spend in front of your keyboard isn't what matters.



That's why we work Remote first. It means our way of working enables remote working for everyone. It's up to you where and when you want to work. We trust you to spend your time wisely. All our rituals and teams are designed for remote working.


You can work in any country in the +/- 1 hour CET time zone range, as we've not mastered the art of working across many timezones and we don't plan to invest our time in that challenge in the next few years. We're also happy to help relocate you to The Netherlands if you prefer. Like to have a change of scenery? You can work from any co-working space, no matter where you're located. We'll cover these costs.


We expect everyone on the team to get together a few times a year as we think it's important to make in-person bonds to strengthen our relations. That means a few times a year you can expect to travel to spend time with your team, make connections, and have fun together.
